SMUDGE (Badlesmere Blue Flex)

This Smudge.

Smudge was born in October 1984. He was a very beautiful blue merle collie, but unfortunately didn’t have much between the ears, bless him.  He was originally my puppy, but we just didn't click together, so I got Sam and Mum took over Smudge's training.  She worked him in Beginners without much success, but she learnt a lot from him which made it easier when she later got Hobby.

When Smudge was 4 years old, he was hit by a car on the access road at the top of my garden. It wasn’t the driver’s fault, and he slammed his brakes on as soon as he saw Smudge, but unfortunately he stopped the car on one of Smudge’s back legs and crushed it quite badly. For a while it was touch and go whether he lost the leg or not, but the vet managed to save it. Smudge could run around with no problems but he always sat in a puppy-sit afterwards so he was unable to work in the obedience ring after the accident. (I think he was quite pleased!)

Smudge enjoyed life as a pet dog, driving us all mad with his obsession for fetching toys. If we had any visitors, he would immediately put a toy on their lap and wait for it to be thrown. If they threw it, he brought it straight back. If they knocked it onto the floor, he immediately picked it up and put it back on their lap. If they ignored it, he would just get another, and another, and another until the poor visitor was covered in toys.  One time I was feeling unwell and fell asleep on the settee. When I woke up an hour or so later, I found that there were 23 toys placed carefully on my body!

Smudge died in November 1997.
